The inaugural session of Startup Weekend Traverse City kicked off last night! With participants representing TC and Northern Michigan, Oakland University, the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Metro Detroit, and beyond, there is a great mix of talent in the room. After the initial meet-and-greet, participants gave their first pitches. Participants then voted for their favorite pitches and these favorites became the startups for the weekend, with teams of developers, designers, entrepreneurs, marketers, etc. forming around them.
We then went to our kick-off party at a local entrepreneur’s awesome pad overlooking the West Grand Traverse Bay and downtown Traverse City. Participants were able to enjoy food from Peninsula Market, wine from Brys Estate, and beer from Rare Bird Brewery, TC’s newest brewery that is opening soon.
Last night, teams wasted no time getting down to business and some teams have already pulled all-nighters! They say the teams that usually win Startup Weekends don’t sleep at all, so we will see if that holds true here.
This morning, Ted Serbinski and Jared Stasik from Detroit Venture Partners chatted with us about Detroit and the greater Michigan startup scene. Being involved in a major venture capitalist firm, they gave us some great insight and advice.
Now it’s time to focus and build. The groups are receiving some awesome tips from our mentors, as they get ready to wow the judges and crowd. The startup presentations are tomorrow and they are open to the community, so we encourage all of you to attend!
