Joel Mueller, Founder of MacUpdate

Joel “J” Mueller is an entrepreneur who started his businesses as a teenager and organically grew them into some of the most popular and well-respected companies in their niches.

The most publicly recognized company, MacUpdate, was founded at age 16 with intentions of being an outlet for J’s passion for online communication and the Mac computer. It has been recognized three times as one of the fastest growing companies in the country by Inc. Magazine. is currently the #2 most popular Mac-only app community on the Internet, reaching nearly 4,000,000 visits each month, second only to It is one of the largest distribution points for Mac app developers, having sold millions of copies of apps.

Jordan Breighner

Jordan Breighner, Founder of Coolhouse Labs

Jordan Breighner was born and raised in Harbor Springs, Michigan before moving to Utah in high school to pursue a ski racing career. After taking some time after high school to race, he found his way to the University of Utah and its ski team. After receiving a B.S. degree in Economics, he joined the 2008 Obama campaign to work on the targeting and data team.

Jordan continued on the Obama team, moving to Washington D.C. for positions first at the White House and later with the Department of Homeland Security. After two years in the administration, he joined up with some former campaign friends to help start the D.C. office of SS+K, a creative communications agency based out of New York City. At SS+K, Jordan worked for clients such as Chevy, the Department of Education, Advance Publications, MSNBC, and the Milwaukee Brewers.

Jordan moved back to Harbor Springs in 2013 and launched Coolhouse Labs, a startup accelerator. Each summer, 5-10 tech startups are invited to be a part of this mentorship-driven program designed to take a team from idea to beta, with Coolhouse providing all the resources necessary to make that jump.

Ted Serbinski, Partner at Detroit Venture Partners

Ted Serbinski will be serving as both a judge and our keynote speaker. Ted is a Partner at Detroit Venture Partners, where he leads investments in early stage software companies.

An Ivy League trailblazer, Ted created his own degree at Cornell University to better understand information technology and how it relates to entrepreneurship. He graduated with a B.S. in Engineering, with a declared major of Information Science, Systems & Technology and a minor in Computer & Electrical Engineering.

He is an early stage software VC, successful tech entrepreneur, open source hacker, and knowledgable mentor. He has been a founding or 1st institutional investor in more than a dozen startups, nearly always getting involved at the company inception phase, as well as an internationally recognized web architect that has been building websites for 15+ years, including 8 years as a lead, open source developer for Drupal.

In 2011, Ted decided relocate to Detroit from San Francisco to help form and found a blossoming startup ecosystem through his roles as seed-stage investor and mentor. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential, emerging venture technology partners in the Midwest and a key player leading the startup renaissance in Detroit.


Jared Stasik, Associate at Detroit Venture Partners

Jared Stasik is an associate at Detroit Venture Partners. He oversees DVP’s financial activities, including reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash management. Additionally, he is responsible for reporting to limited partners, ensuring compliance with limited partnership agreements, and assisting with cash planning for portfolio companies. He has broad expertise in financial modeling, operations analysis, and market research. Prior to joining DVP, Jared spent five years as a Consultant at ZS Associates, a leading global consulting firm in sales and marketing strategy.

Jared earned his B.B.A. from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. He earned an M.B.A. from the Haas School of Business at the University of California-Berkeley, graduating with high honors and receiving the distinction of Most Outstanding Graduate Instructor for his instruction of Operations Management and Leadership Communication.
