Whether you show up with an idea or just a passion to create, by the end of the weekend you'll be on a team of energetic innovators that have built something awesome. Startup Weekends happen all over the world and exist to turn ideas into viable businesses over the course of a weekend. Join us as we bring Startup Weekend to Traverse City for the first time. Startup Weekend Traverse City is Michigan's premiere entrepreneurial event, featuring hundreds of engineers, designers, and business hustlers gathering together in beautiful Traverse City to turn innovative ideas into reality. All meals are provided and lodging has been made available for just $20/night.

Three Venues for the Weekend

  • Friday night’s Kick-off Party will be held Downtown Traverse City. Location TBA
  • Hustling throughout the weekend at NMC’s Tech Center. Complete with breakout rooms, 3D Printers, and 24 hour access.
  • Presenting at NMC’s Maritime Great Lakes building Sunday evening, on the shores of the West Grand Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan.

Lodging Option

Housing has been made available at NMC’s East Hall for the event. The cost to event participants is $20 per night. Just add a housing ticket at registration. More details can be found here.

Jordan Breighner

Jordan was born and raised in Harbor Springs, Michigan before moving to Utah in high school to pursue a ski racing career. After taking some time after high school to race, he found his way to the University of Utah and its ski team. After receiving a BS degree in Econ, he joined the 2008 Obama campaign to work on the targeting and data team.

Jordan continued on the Obama team, moving to DC for positions first at the White House and later with the Dept. of Homeland Security. After two years in the administration, he joined up with some former campaign friends to help start the DC office of SS+K, a creative communications agency based out of NYC. At SS+K, Jordan worked for clients such as Chevy, the Department of Education, Advance Publications, MSNBC, Milwaukee Brewers, and CAA.

Jared Stasik

Jared is Vice President at Detroit Venture Partners. He oversees DVP's financial activities, including reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash management. Additionally, he is responsible for reporting to limited partners, ensuring compliance with limited partnership agreements, and assisting with cash planning for portfolio companies. He has broad expertise in financial modeling, operations analysis, and market research. Prior to joining DVP, Jared spent five years as a Consultant at ZS Associates, a leading global consulting firm in sales and marketing strategy.
Jared earned his BBA from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. He earned an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California-Berkeley, graduating with high honors and receiving the distinction of Most Outstanding Graduate Instructor for his instruction of Operations Management and Leadership Communication.

Gary Brooks is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Gary has a track record of over 13 years of start up and enterprise-level experience handling thousands of clients and teams of people. Prior to, Gary founded a successful dial-up Internet company and a chain of cash advance stores. In his free time Gary enjoys spending time with his family, including his two sons.


Program Director at MMIC

Chris leads member engagement at MMIC and works with all of its state programs and partners including the Business Accelerator Fund and Pressed Matching Fund program, providing microloans for startups. He assists new businesses in gaining access to capital, facilitates workshops and competitions, manages business development and customer discovery programs and serves as key contact in facilities management and operations with Dow. Chris is also a liaison with the BlueWater Angels investment group, supporting membership and deal flow development.

Bruce Finlayson

Finlayson is a volunteer SCORE mentor and currently serves as the Chairman of SCORE Traverse City. He is a managing partner at Innovative Capital Partners, a consulting firm focused on business development for small business in the U.S. and globally. Previously, he worked at AT&T and Lucent Technologies in a number of executive positions in operations, engineering, customer service, and professional services. Finlayson currently serves on the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross of Northwest Michigan and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Traverse City and is also a member of the Traverse City Rotary Club.

Marshall Persky

SCORE Volunteer

Marshall Persky is a volunteer SCORE mentor and the former Chairman of SCORE Traverse City. A retired Lieutenant Colonel and member of the U.S. Army Active Reserve, Persky previously held a number of senior sales positions with the world’s largest metal service center, Ryerson Steel. He is an active member of the Traverse City community serving in volunteer leadership positions with Third Level Crisis Intervention, the Grand Traverse Pavilions Foundation, the Human Rights Commission, and is a member of Rotary International.
